Mother’s Ruin Gin Bar

Meet the first Mother City venue dedicated to this age-old spirit

If craft beer was the hero of the past few years, then gin, it would seem, is the hotshot of 2015. Yes, the spirit that’s long been synonymous with greying retirees and the 18th-century poor has quickly become cool, and the December 2014 opening of Mother’s Ruin, a venue that’s purportedly Africa’s first dedicated gin bar, on one of the hippest streets in Cape Town is case in point.

Brothers Rob and Mark Mulholland, the owners of this new Bree Street venture, actually took their cue from the burgeoning gin scene in the US, where the assortment of different styles is, according to the well-travelled pair, “just mind-blowing”. The movement has shuddered to a start in South Africa too (we’re seeing more and more micro-distilleries crafting their own labels), but no doubt, the fresh-faced bar will help give it a good kick in the right direction.
