Though the Smokehouse only touched down in Braamfontein in 2013, the real story started some forty years before, when George Catzavelos launched the hugely successful steakhouse chain of Highwaymen restaurants. Following in his father’s footsteps, Nick, the owner of the Smokehouse, started learning the ropes from a very young age. Not only did his father mentor him, but he also spent six years in the U.S. learning the restaurant business. It was there that he was inspired by the traditional southern, smoky BBQ taste and flavour.

Realising his dream of opening a smokehouse in Jozi didn’t come easy, as the smoker equipment needed was simply not available in SA. But once imported from the U.S., Nick was able to open Jozi’s, and South Africa’s, first authentic smokehouse. Already hugely successful, Nick has plans to extend the franchise across South Africa, so that everyone can get a taste of the best-kept open secret in the country.
